In April 2016 I was part of a reading for Chicago Zine Fest where I shared a piece from the new issue of Lady Teeth called "Getting Sober & Staying Sober". Lady Teeth was included in the zine exhibit "Between the Staples" at CHI PRC in Chicago from November 10-26, 2017 - more info here. My zine Life Without Booze: Reflections on Six Years Sober was included in the zine exhibit "Zines as Creative Resistance" at The Graduate Center Library @ CUNY - more info here. |
As a zine maker who once spent all her time hanging out in the riot grrrl AOL chat room & various message boards, I love the idea of having somewhere other than social media where I exist on the internet, a homebase for all my projects. I started making zines in the late 90s after a girl down the shore handed me a copy of Cometbus & told me to read it. It changed my life. I started making a zine soon after that was basically a Cometbus ripoff. After six issues of that zine I started writing Girl Swirl. I put out twelve issues of Girl Swirl before I started my zine Sub Rosa and eventually Lady Teeth. In 2023 I make a monthly mini zine that was available by Patreon subscription. Years ago, I wrote a review piece for Bitch Media on zines about sobriety. I have fourteen years of continuous sobriety from alcohol. At some point I found the time to write a book called Heavy Hangs the Head.
I put out nine issues of Lady Teeth & maybe one day there may be another? Ther were 12 issues of the Patreon mini zine-a-month. I also put out Sub Rosa (1-7), Girl Swirl (1-13 including 11.5), Sophisti-Femme (1-6) and the following mini zines/one offs/etc: Life Without Booze: Reflections on Six Years Sober, Moods: A zine about covered bridges, An East Coast Girl's Guide to Record Stores in the PNW, Home, A Girl Called Mike, Boshi (1-3), Sid, Boobs & the Milk Cart, Dear Gwen (which appeared in Bust Magazine), Dear Gwen PS, To Stop To Listen and Inside & Out (issues 1-2). I also wrote a book, Heavy Hangs the Head. "Perzines are about vulnerability and sharing part of yourself with an audience, but Lady Teeth utilizes a whole other kind of vulnerability: the kind achieved when opening up to someone you trust."
- Women Write About Comics "By the time I reached the back cover, I felt like she and I had gone on a really solid road trip together because we’d had such an in-depth, varied conversation." - Bianca Barragan, LA Zine Fest |
